Introduction
Kees Dorst has a PhD in design. He is from Holland and moved to Australia because of his ideas in Holland were criticized in a traditional sense. The culture in Australia has an open approach when it comes to design solutions. In his YouTube video clip, he explains what design is.
Design is:
· Open
· Complex
· Dynamic
· Networked

“Design cannot be solved in isolation. “ (Dorst, 2017)
Kees explains a model that can be used to solve design problems. The phases are:
o Archeology: where does the problem come from.
o Paradox:
o Stakeholders: broader arena of context.
o Themes: Themes of how ideas express themselves in relation to others.
o Frames: New approaches to problems (testing)
o Futures: Create leading ideas that could alter the problem for a solution.
o Transformation: How organizations can change for the solution. Is it a too big of a leap? How can they engage?
o Connect: How can this solution in the broad arena be learnt?
“Crimes are a symptom of what is wrong in society.” (Dorst, 2017)
His projects specialize in public spaces. He has designed solutions for the night life of King’s Cross in Sydney. The city had an issue with the traffic in the area. Dorst discovered other altering reasons why the traffic was congested. Another project was for garbage bins in Sydney. Terrorist attacks, using bombs in dustbins resulted the city to remove all dustbins in public spaces. With street vendors on the increase, litter became a huge problem. Again, Dorst discovered other problems through design thinking. His ideas are implemented on real world problems. The designed dustbin has clear class in front to see the contents, as well as a chamber to slide in an x-ray sheet to scan what is in between the garbage.
Conclusion
Design is always evolving. Kees Dorst, as a professor, plays a pivitol role in the desgin industry. Through his work, the science of design can be understood and processes can facilitate other designers. His model can be used to fix problems, improve service design, and pave a road where user experience is considered.
